Hammered Dulcimer Champion

2005 National Hammered Dulcimer champion Max Zbiral-Teller plays 'Apple Juice’, an original composition, at Bard College in upstate New York.

Max studied under Kat Eggleston for ten years. Several years later he traveled to Senegal, West Africa, to study the Mandinko technique with the Cissoko griot family.

The hammered dulcimer or hammer dulcimer is an ancient trapezoidal music instrument with several courses of strings. It is played by striking the strings with hammers.

The name "dulcimer" is derived from Latin, meaning "sweet sound". Hammered dulcimers were popular in England during the reign of James I, when the Bible was translated into English as the King James Bible.
